When leaders are tilted too far into personas that come across as extreme, others tend to notice this as a dynamic that is out of balance. This causes politics and interpersonal issues on the team because those personalities who represent a different perspective feel that something crucial is missing from the imbalanced judgment of the leader and it is! When this happens, very often an informal leader will emerge and create a faction of like-minded followers which begins to divide the team emotionally. And divided teams are not only ineffective, they don’t succeed and can be blocked from their full potential. We all have personas (favorite personality strategies) that we can use in ways that are either counterproductive or contributive…the key is to know ourselves well enough to tell the difference! Our classes in coaching teach leaders how to identify when they are enacting a personas for some strategic reason and to know when they are productive and effective…OR NOT.
